The Difference Between a Diffuser That Fills a Room and One That Just Sits There
Most people don't think about their diffuser until it stops working the way they expected — the room still smells like nothing, or the scent fades within an hour, or it's noticeably weaker in the living room than it was in the small office where they first tried it.
There's usually a simple reason: diffusers are built for specific room sizes, and the technology behind them matters more than the marketing copy suggests.
Coverage area isn't a suggestion
A diffuser rated for a 200 sq ft room will genuinely struggle in an open-plan living and dining space that's closer to 500 sq ft. It's not that the unit is faulty — it's mismatched to the space. Before buying (or troubleshooting one you already own), it's worth measuring the actual room, not estimating it.
Nebulizing vs. heat-based diffusion
Nebulizing diffusers break fragrance oil into a fine, cold mist without heat or water, which tends to carry scent further and preserve the oil's character more accurately. Heat-based and ultrasonic diffusers are quieter and often cheaper, but the throw is usually shorter and the scent can shift slightly as it warms.
Neither is objectively "better" — it depends on whether you want a strong, defined scent in a specific zone or a lighter, ambient one spread more broadly.
Oil concentration and dilution
Some oils are sold pre-diluted for ultrasonic use; using them in a nebulizing unit (or vice versa) changes both intensity and how quickly you'll go through a bottle. If a scent feels weaker than expected, checking whether the oil matches the diffuser type is worth doing before assuming the hardware is at fault.
None of this is complicated once it's laid out, but it rarely gets explained clearly at the point of purchase — which is usually the actual source of the "my diffuser isn't working" complaint.
